Saint Josephine Bakhita
1869-1947
Feast Day -- February 8
Saint Giuseppina, or Josephine, Bakhita was born in Sudan, Africa. At twelve, she was kidnapped and made a slave for many years. Eventually she moved to Italy, where she gained her freedom. She lived in a convent and learned about Jesus there. From the sisters, she discovered that God loves us so much he died for us. Because she wanted to help others learn about Jesus, she became a sister, too, and helped prepare missionaries to go to her native Africa.
Patron of Sudan, Saint Josephine's name "Bakhita" is an Arabic word for fortunate.
May all slavery through out the world end through the intercession of Saint Josephine. Amen.
