Venerable Pierre Toussaint
1766-1853
Venerable Pierre Toussaint was a slave born in Haiti. His owner taught him to read and write. When his owner's family moved to New York City, they brought Pierre with them. Pierre became a barber and helped support his owner's family after the man died. He and his wife raised his niece. He was well known for his generosity to the poor. Because he wanted a beautiful place for people to celebrate the Eucharist, he helped build St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York.
Venerable Pierre is the first layperson buried below the main altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral. He attended Mass every day for 66 years.
Dear God, may we do our jobs cheerfully and give generously of our time, talent, and treasure like Venerable Pierre. Amen
