Saint Mary MacKillop
1842-1909
Feast Day -- August 8
Saint Mary MacKillop is the first Australian to become a Saint. She was a teacher, and rode horses a long way into the desert, called the Outback. to teach the children of farmers and miners, and the native Australians, called Aborigines. When she was made a Saint, many Aborigines came to the ceremony in Italy. They wore face paint, danced traditional dances and played musical instruments called didgeridoos during the Mass to show how much they loved Mary. Saint Mary loved them too.
Patron of the Knights of the Southern Cross. Saint Mary has a rose named after her, the Mary MacKillop rose.
Courage, courage, trust in God who helps you in all things. (Saint Mary's prayer.)
