Saint Kateri Tekakwitha
1656-1680
Feast Day -- July 14
Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American to be canonized. Her father was Mohawk warrior, and her mother was an Algonquian Christian. Kateri learned about Jesus from Jesuit missionaries. She often prayed in the woods and heard God through the wonders of creation. Her family died in a smallpox epidemic, and she was left with scars and poor eyesight. One of her titles is the "Lily of the Mohawks."
Patron of Native Americans, ecology, nature and the environment. Saint Kateri often wore a blanket over her head to protect her eyes from the sun.
O God, may we always see creation as the loving work of your hands, as Saint Kateri did. Amern.
