Saint Marianna Cope
1838-1918
Feast Day -- January 23
Saint Marianna Cope was born in Germany, but came to the United States as a baby. When she was 24, she became a Franciscan Sister, and worked in hospitals in New York. One day she learned that King Kalakaua of Hawaii was asking for Sisters to come to the islands to work with lepers. Marianna and six other Sisters traveled to Honolulu. She worked at the leper colony on Molokai to help Father Damien, who was dying of leprosy himself and would also be canonized.
patron of lepers, outcasts, and Hawaii. When asked to go to Hawaii, Saint Marianna said, "I am not afraid of any disease."
You spent your life caring for the sick, Saint Marianna. Help us when we are sick. Amen.
