With the exception of Sundays, there is a difference between the Lectionary for Mass and the readings in this book. When we first started Children's Daily Prayer, we selected particular Scripture stories and themes to help children become familiar with the Bible. We have returned to that practice.
1. Children's Daily Prayer is a form of the Liturgy of the Hours, adapted for children. It uses Scripture passages that are different from what we would hear at daily Mass. In keeping with the spirit of the Liturgy of the Hours, we have adapted the same practice for Children's Daily Prayer.
2. In the past, when we used the Lectionary as the basis for the readings, we found that many of the same readings were repeated from year to year, limiting the range of Scripture the children had the opportunity to hear, and many readings were difficult for children to comprehend.
